GOOD NEWS! YOU CAN (PROBABLY) VOTE
Are you an EU citizen? Or have you lived in Aarhus for more than four years? If either of these statements are correct then congratulations, you can vote in the municipal elections on the 18th of November, unlike in national elections, in the municipal elections no citizenship is required.
Our English page is currently under construction, but below you can read some general information about who we are and what we propose for the municipality of Aarhus during this election:
WHO WE ARE
Enhedslisten/Red-Green Alliance is a socialist party seeking to build a Denmark where power lies in the hands of everyday people – instead of the rich. Currently, in spite of many generations of democratic progess, the richest 1% of Denmark own more wealth than 82% of danes combined. An elite class of danish capitalists unfortunately still dominate Danish society.
But Enhedslisten seeks to change this, by using democratic institutions we seek to decisively redistribute political and economic power away from this economic elite and towards the people as a whole. By using our influence to improve the lives of everyday people, we believe we’re paving the path towards a truly democratic and socialist society. Simultaniously, we believe we’re in a unique position to do so, due to the fact that unlike most other political parties in Denmark – we do not receive any funding from elite interests.

WHAT WE WANT
For this election our key proposals for Aarhus are:
- Free buses in Aarhus (like what has been recently accomplished in Fredericia another Danish city)
- Cheaper housing – for people, not for profits
- Better lives for children –instead of the austerity
All of our proposals are fully financed through an equitable taxation of people in Aarhus.

A SOCIALLY JUST AND GREEN CITY
Climate change is already affecting our everyday lives. In Aarhus, we must lead the way and show that a large city can be both green, climate-friendly and full of life. We want to create a city where we live in balance with nature – and where the Aarhusians of today and tomorrow can live sustainably and within planetary boundaries. Enhedslisten will fight for:
- Free city buses.
It must be easy, cheap and climate-friendly to get around Aarhus - More green urban spaces.
Backyards and public squares must be for people, community and nature – pedestrians and cyclists before cars. - A vibrant Aarhus Bay.
We must restore the marine environment and secure recreational areas along the bay. We continue to fight against the port expansion and for a sewage treatment plant to be built off Tangkrogen – it must be established on land instead.
AN AARHUS FOR EVERYONE
Aarhus is a city full of life, with community and diversity. This is how it should be in the future, but it requires us to correct it. Because when capital interests are allowed to decide, we risk that both the housing market and cultural life will be taken over by those who only think about profit. At the same time, we must stand firm that Aarhus is a red city, where no one is discriminated against – regardless of social background, ethnicity or sexuality. Enhedslisten will fight for:
- Cheaper housing.
It must be affordable to live in Aarhus regardless of whether you are a student, a family with children or an elderly person. That is why we will introduce a requirement for 4,000 new public housing units. - A strong and free cultural life.
Increased support for local communities and non-commercial cultural initiatives, so that culture and creativity have space to flourish in the city (Cultural Cliff Card) - Equality in life.
Aarhus Municipality must take responsibility and introduce an action plan against racism that is continuously evaluated by the municipality, so that all citizens are met with respect and recognition.

TOGETHER FOR BETTER WELFARE
In Denmark, on paper, we are among the happiest people in the world. But behind the statistics lies a different reality. Far too many children and young people are not thriving, and far too many with disabilities do not get the help they need and are entitled to, and still more people have difficulty making their everyday lives function. It is not good enough – we must do better. In Aarhus, everyone must have the opportunity to live a safe, satisfactory and meaningful life. Well-being is not something we can leave to chance. It requires political priorities and action. Enhedslisten will fight for:
- More adults in everyday life.
Real minimum standards in day care institutions with trained pedagogues and two adults in school classes. Then there is room for both learning and community. - A dignified life for all.
Aarhus Municipality must ensure a viable disposable income for people on transfer income. - Better and strengthened support for people with disabilities.
Among other things, by increasing the funds for the BPA scheme (Citizen-controlled Personal Assistance). Everyone has the right to a free, independent and dignified life.
The Unity Party will primarily finance our policy with a 1% tax increase, as Aarhus has become one of the municipalities in the country with the lowest municipal tax and then also an increase in the coverage fee (dækningsafgift), which is a contribution to covering the expenses that commercial properties in particular impose on the municipality. As the policies we proposal ovarall wil work to decrease inequality, the overall effects of these policies will be a less unequal, more equitable Aarhus Kommune.

ENHEDSLISTEN FIGHTS AGAINST THE RACIST GHETTO LEGISLATION
Stop the demolitions. We are fighting against the racist demolition policy of the Ghetto Act. Renovation, welfare and equality are the solution – not forced relocation and destruction of homes.
The rest of our English page is still being worked on, please check back in a few days, otherwise feel free to contact us through the contact information at the bottom of the page.
Best wishes, Enhedslisten.
